National Lung Cancer Screening Day 2026 | Puyallup, WA

If you’ve been putting off your lung cancer screening because of work or a busy schedule, this is your chance. Diagnostic Imaging Northwest is opening its doors on Saturday, November 14, for National Lung Cancer Screening Day — part of Lung Cancer Awareness Month. This special event makes it easier for you to take care of your health with a simple, low-dose CT (LDCT) scan that could save your life.

Who Should Get Screened

You may qualify if you:

  • Are 50-80 years old
  • Currently smoke or quit within the last 15 years
  • Have a 20 pack-year or greater smoking history
  • Have no symptoms of lung cancer

What You’ll Need

  • A signed order from your healthcare provider
  • Insurance authorization (if your plan requires it)

Why It Matters

Lung cancer is the leading cause of death in the U.S., but early detection saves lives. A low-dose CT scan can find lung cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage – often before symptoms appear.

What Is Low-Dose Lung Cancer Screening

Low-dose CT lung cancer screening (LDCT) is a quick, non-invasive imaging test that checks your lungs for early signs of cancer—before symptoms appear. It’s designed for individuals at high risk for lung cancer due to smoking history or other factors, even if they feel fine.

This specialized CT scan detects small lung nodules (which may be early cancers) that a regular chest X-ray might miss. Catching these nodules early can significantly improve the chances of successful treatment and survival.

Who Qualifies for Low-Dose Lung Cancer Screening?

Eligibility for Low-dose CT Lung Cancer Screening is based on the results from the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) and must follow this specific criteria:

  • Must be 50 – 80* years of age
*Age range may vary by insurance carrier. Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid plans only cover up to age 77.
  • Asymptomatic with no signs or symptoms of lung disease
  • Have a tobacco smoking history of 20 pack-years**
**One pack-year = smoking one pack per day for one year; 1 pack = 20 cigarettes
  • Currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years
  • A written order for a Low-dose CT Lung Cancer Screening from a physician
  • Physician provided smoking cessation guidance
  • Evidence of shared decision-making with a physician

What Can I Expect Before And After My Lung Cancer Screening?
  • If Your Scan Is Normal:
No further action is needed right away. Most patients return in one year for a follow-up screening.

  • If a Nodule Is Found:
Don’t panic—a positive LDCT result doesn’t mean you have cancer. In fact, more than 95% of nodules are non-cancerous and may be caused by past infections or inflammation.

    Your doctor may recommend:

    • A follow-up LDCT in a few months to monitor the nodule

    • Additional imaging, such as a PET scan

    • A biopsy, if the nodule appears suspicious or changes over time
