Becoming an MRI Technologist: Hannah & Beau’s Journey into Radiology

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to become a radiologic technologist—especially how one transitions into specialized roles like MRI—Hannah and Beau’s stories are for you. Both started their careers with TRA Medical Imaging and Diagnostic Imaging Northwest (DINW) as x-ray technologists and, through the support and training provided by the organization, successfully advanced into MRI. Their experiences show how a career in radiology can evolve, with dedication and the right guidance. Their stories highlight not only the dedication it takes to enter radiology but also the possibilities that open up with the right support.

Hannah’s Story: From Childhood Inspiration to MRI Technologist

For Hannah, the spark began early. Growing up, she often visited her mother’s workplace—an imaging clinic in the Puget Sound region, known for being one of the few locations at the time with an open MRI scanner. The unique, patient-friendly design made a lasting impression on her.

Years later, she took the first step toward a radiology career by enrolling in an x-ray technologist program in Houston, Texas. The two-year program provided the foundation she needed to enter the healthcare field with confidence. After graduation, she returned to Washington, where she worked at an urgent care clinic before joining Diagnostic Imaging Northwest as an x-ray tech.

But Hannah’s ultimate goal had always been to become an MRI technologist. Drawn to the modality’s use of magnetic fields instead of radiation and the capability the machines offer to treat patients, she saw it as both safe and scientifically fascinating. When TRA/DINW offered her the opportunity to train in MRI, she seized it. Now, a little over a month into her new role, she’s thriving—and continuing to learn every day.

Beau’s Journey: A Midlife Career Shift with a Scientific Passion

Beau’s path to radiology began later in life, but his enthusiasm and determination are no less inspiring. In his 40s, after years in a different field, he decided it was time for a career change. He enrolled at Wenatchee Valley College to pursue radiologic technology, drawn by the balance it offered—being a vital part of patient care without the demands of bedside, 24/7 clinical responsibilities.

With a background and interest in the sciences, radiology felt like a natural fit. He appreciated the small, focused classes and hands-on learning in the two-year x-ray program. Once working in the field, Beau spent several years as an x-ray technologist before taking on the next challenge: training to become an MRI tech with through TRA/DINW.

Overcoming a personal fear of needles during his MRI training was a milestone that Beau is proud of—a testament to his growth and dedication to patient care.

Shared Values, Unique Paths

Though Hannah and Beau had different journeys, both found their way to fulfilling careers in MRI through the support and training offered at TRA and Diagnostic Imaging Northwest. They emphasize how competitive radiography programs have become and encourage anyone interested in the field to gain as much relevant experience as possible before applying, but also note how rewarding the career field is and something they will continue through life.

A Day in the Life of an MRI Technologist

A typical day for Hannah and Beau includes:

  • Reviewing and protocoling exams to ensure patient safety
  • Greeting patients warmly and addressing their questions
  • Performing MRI scans with precision and care
  • Preparing images for radiologist interpretation

Both credit their supportive coworkers and collaborative environment for keeping them energized and engaged. The dynamic nature of MRI keeps them learning and growing every day.

Why TRA/DINW?

One of the most valuable aspects of working with TRA Medical Imaging and Diagnostic Imaging Northwest is the clear and supported path for career growth. Both Hannah and Beau are perfect examples of how TRA/DINW doesn’t just hire talented individuals—it invests in them.
