Stereotactic 3D-Guided Breast Biopsy

3D-Guided Breast Biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure using 3D mammography and X-ray imaging to gather tissue samples from a breast abnormality. In addition to traditional 2D targets, this biopsy technique allows us to target and sample lesions which can only be identified with 3D mammography.

Your Stereotactic 3D-Guided Breast Biopsy

For your Stereotactic 3D-Guided Breast Biopsy appointment, you should plan on being in the center less than 2 hours, which will include all pre- and post-procedure care. The procedure itself will take about 15 – 20 minutes. During this time you will remain still, in a seated position while your breast is compressed. The technologist will take a 3D image of your breast to pinpoint the exact location of the suspicious area to be biopsied by your doctor. Your skin will be cleansed with a sterilizing solution and numbed with anesthetic. A very small skin nick will then be made to make it easier for the biopsy needle to enter the breast.

Typically, multiple tissue samples will be collected through the single skin nick. A final set of images may be taken to verify that the appropriate tissue was collected. These samples will be sent to and interpreted by a pathologist. The radiologist may place a small metallic marker (smaller than a grain of rice) at the biopsy site as a reference point for future imaging, and confirms that the area of concern has been biopsied. Following your procedure, a mammogram will be performed to document the position of the marker.

How to Prepare for Your Procedure

When you schedule your procedure, we will review your health history and any medications you are currently taking. On the day of your procedure, you may eat and drink normally.

Please wear a comfortable, loose fitting two-piece outfit, as you will be asked to remove your top prior to the procedure. For your comfort, a gown will be provided. Please refrain from wearing any powder, perfume, deodorant and/or lotion on your underarms and breasts prior to the procedure.

What to Expect After Your Procedure

Following your Stereotactic 3D-Guided Breast Biopsy, your breast may be slightly tender and you may experience some bruising at the biopsy site. You will need to wear a supportive bra and keep the dressing that covers your incision clean and dry for the first 24 – 48 hours. You should ice the biopsy site following the procedure. Detailed self-care instructions will be provided to you immediately following your biopsy.

Avoid any strenuous activity for 48 hours following your procedure, especially activities that involve repetitive movement of the chest and arms, such as lifting, vacuuming, swimming and exercising.
